The male
nanny recently emerged from a state of occupational
obscurity to find himself in the cultural spotlight.
Thanks to portrayals of male caregivers on shows like
Friends and Ally McBeal - and articles and publications in
TIME magazine -
METRO
many now recognize that men can be
nannies. In other parts of the world, this may be
nothing new, but in Canada it's a groundbreaking concept.
According to trend spotters, the change reflects a shift
in societal values. Many men are graduating from
caregiver schools and men are being placed by agencies
nationwide.
What kind of
qualification do mannies have?
Employment as a manny usually
follows prior work experience with children and families.
Some male nannies grew up looking after younger siblings
and/or babysitting for neighbors. Many developed
skills working with children during high school and
college, serving as camp counselors, lifeguards, sports
coaches, activity instructors, and tutors. A
significant number of professional mannies posses college
degrees and have considerable experience in areas like
child development, psychology, and special education.
Some possess teaching credentials. Most are at least
certified caregivers with a six month full-time training
which includes First Aide and CPR.

Here's a
few things to consider:
-
Serving as male role-models
- In households where a father-figure is often absent
- or nonexistent - mannies may be viewed as having
particular value. This normally comes up with
parents raising sons, some feel interaction with a mature
and responsible man can be just as important for girls.
-
Getting dirty - Men are
often hired to serve as rough-and-tumble, active,
sporty-type nannies. After parents notice their
child's energy level consistently exceeding that of a
female caregiver, some parents conclude that it's time for
a male nanny.
-
Not replacing mom -
Some women have suggested that employing a female
caregiver can create ambiguity for children. They
are concerned that their kids will feel like they're given
a "substitute mommy." Therefore, hiring a Manny
represents a less stressful alternative (unless, of
course, there's a father now worried about having a
"substitute daddy").
-
Discipline - Some
employers interview male caregivers in hopes of finding a
person whom their children will see as having authority.
Some parents may decide their children are more likely to
respect and listen to a man.
